Bought my first house, married my first wife.

Stayed in the same house for 15 years - the wife didn't even last that number of months.

Recall many roadside fires on the drive between Chadwell Heath & Burnt Oak (pre-M25, pre-house purchase) - and I think Charlie Brown's roundabout was still a roundabout....

Summer '76 (down here) - Feb 10th met (via work) the woman who was to become my partner for life: invited her to a party on Sat 14th. Set about organising a party for Sat 14th! Then told all my mates I'd met THE woman. And so it proved, as here we are 41 years on. So, yes, 1976 was a very good year.

Wasn't 1976 all Brotherhood of Man, men called Kenneth in flares & SIDEBURNS & every child being done up the arse by Jimmy Savile?

GOING BACK TO THE 1970s?

Before monetarism?

Surely that's a recepie for utter disaster?

Was living in my own place in Manor Park in the second year of my first marriage had my scaphoid pinned so was in plaster for eleven weeks so when it came off I looked like a bronzed God with a lolly stick arm :-)

Sydney

Exactly... I was 8 that summer and my abiding memory is spending long hot summer days at school playing outside, we even had most of our lessons outside that summer... wonderful time.

I imagine that 1976 was full of miserable old sods complaining that that things aren't like they were in the good old days.

Re: 1976
I know its easy to look back with rose tinted specs and all that but compared to today I think life was better back in 1976, add in today’s nanny state and all this PC rubbish, not to mention all the hate, selfishness and nastiness that seems to be part of society these days and the obsession with celebrity’s and designer gear and maybe the 1970,s and early 80,s was the peak for our society, since then for all the advances we have made in technology etc, for my liking we have gone backwards.

More and more people lead insular lives today, community is fast becoming a thing of the past as the pubs and social activities close and everything is online instead, not long before we have generations who are socially inept from a childhood wrapped in cotton wool on Xbox or play station and little or no interaction with others except on facebook or twitter, even at school these days, lunch break is spent on the smart phone, kids don’t really play games or socialise much in the playground anymore.

Depressing in many ways….

The heat caused deoxygenation of the water in my fishing club's lake. We lost a lot of good carp that summer.

Fucking global warming!
